The Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic is a holistic animal clinic that
strives to promote the health and well being of your animal companions
by blending conventional and alternative medicine. We offer a range
of conventional practices combined with Chinese herbal medicine, western
herbal medicine, homeopathy and acupuncture. We also provide surgical
procedures including dental surgeries, soft tissue procedures, spaying
and neutering.
It is our mission to offer a more natural, environmentally aware, and
compassionate approach to medicine. We recognize that all living beings
are complex and unique individuals and we all share the common threads
of life.
How we differ from a conventional practice
By providing you with nutritional information and other prevention strategies
we can promote health before disease begins. When imbalances do occur,
we not only treat the symptoms, but look for the cause as well. We treat
your individual animal rather then just a diagnosis. To ensure that
we get to know you and your pet well, our first appointment are scheduled
for 45 min. Follow ups generally run 15 – 30 minutes. The following
are the modalities that we use in our practice:
Nutrition is the basis of health for your animal. What
they take in on a daily basis can either strengthen or weaken their
constitution. Much of the foods on the market today do the later. Our
doctors can help prescribe a diet that is best for your animal based
on proper protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamin and mineral content.
Chinese Medicine is based on the movement of energy
or “Qi” in your animal’s body. Imbalances in that
movement can have effects on organ systems. We evaluate the balance
of Qi in the body by taking a complete history, palpating your animal’s
pulse, observing their tongue and performing orthopedic tests. Acupuncture
and herbs can restore healthy Qi flow where imbalances exist, improving
health, mobility and overall vitality.
Homeopathy is an energetic medicine based on the “law
of similars”. This means that a substance that can cause symptoms
in a healthy animal will cure an animal with those same symptoms. (For
example ipecac generally causes vomiting but in dilute doses it can
stop vomiting.) Remedies are made of very dilute doses of natural substances
such as plants and minerals that coat small lactose pellets. Each natural
substance is complex and so is your animal. Prescriptions are made based
on symptoms as well as your animal’s individual preferences and
behaviors.
Botanical Medicines have been used throughout the world
for thousands of years to enhance and restore health. Based on traditional
knowledge as well as new pharmacological data, we can prescribe the
formula that is right for your animal. Much of our botanical prescribing
takes into account the energetics of your animal (based on Chinese diagnosis)
as well as the Western diagnosis and symptoms.
Other services: There are times when pharmaceutical
drugs and surgery are appropriate for your animal’s health. All
of our doctors hold DVM degrees from conventional veterinary schools
and are extensively trained in these modalities for times when the doctor
and client agree these are appropriate.
